TV Review: Blind Justice

Blind Justice
Created by Steven Bochco, Nicholas Wootton and Matt Olmstead
ABC Wednesdays at 10:00 P.M.
Critical Consensus: 54 [mediocre] (11 reviews)

Baltimore Sun: 75
“It's a decent enough show, well-acted and nice to look at, if a little overfull of happy coincidence, stock characters and situational cliche.”

Chicago Tribune: 75
“Blind Justice will go way beyond its fanciful premise to unlock criminal mysteries and maybe address a few in the human heart as well.”

Cox News Service: 75
“"Blind Justice" may not revolutionize the cop drama genre (the cases are still standard-issue), but it definitely gives us a new breed of detective worth watching.”

Pittsburgh Live” 75
“ Once viewers meet the new detectives in the Tuesday time slot, the loss of "NYPD Blue" will not be so painful.”

USA Today: 75
“You may not find a classic if you tune in, but you will find a solid, entertaining TV show.”

Boston Globe: 50
“Despite a likable lead performance by Ron Eldard, and the slick production values of creator Steven Bochco, ABC's new series settles for the sort of nobler than-thou portrayal that marred the final seasons of Bochco's NYPD Blue.”

Chicago Sun-Times: 50
“...at its foundation, "Blind Justice" is a well-acted but very ordinary police drama”

Hollywood Reporter: 50
“The result is a serviceable drama in which the characters, including Dunbar, remain largely two-dimensional and highly predictable.”

Pop Matters: 50
“Despite [its] shortcomings and its trafficking in able-bodied stereotypes, Blind Justice isn't entirely without merit.”

Pittsburgh Post Gazette: 25
Blind Justice is vintage [Steven] Bochco, but it's a tired vintage that's lost any distinct flavor, rendering it bland "Justice" for all.”

Houston Chronicle: 0
“Beyond the blind-man concept, Blind Justice comes up arrestingly short with predictable and familiar story lines involving a serial killer, a missing child and a police officer.” (Note: the reviewer goes on to compare it to Cop Rock)

TV Review: Jake In Progress

Jake in Progress
ABC Thursdays at 8:00 P.M.
Critical Consensus: 64 [okay]

Seattle Times: 100
“Jake in Progress is the reinvented sitcom that TV has badly needed. It combines fast, in-the-know humor and a surprising amount of heart. It treats us like the smart viewers we are without a hint of bi-coastal snobbery.”

E! Online: 75
“A pretty lead, quirky sidekicks and Hollywood skewering? Progress might just be what the ailing sitcom genre needs.”

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: 75
“Jake in Progress is a funny, likable show, if a bit of an HBO wannabe (single camera, no laugh track) in both execution and tone.”

Chicago Sun-Times: 63
“...overall there's little to make us want to commit. Not yet. While it doesn't have us at hello, it might eventually get us.”

Entertainment Weekly: 50
“...an underdeveloped sitcom in which Stamos' Jake alternates snappy talk while he strides along Manhattan's fast track with sappy talk while he apologizes to an ever-regenerating supply of irked women.”

TV Guide (Matt Roush): 25
“[a] slick but empty new comedy.”

TV Review: Law & Order: Trial By Jury

Critics hail Jerry Orbach's final performances, but as for the show itself, not so much.

Law and Order: Trial By Jury
Created by Dick Wolf
NBC Fridays at 10:00 P.M.
Consensus Score: 53 [mediocre] (7 reviews)

Hollywood Reporter: 75
“This Law & Order acorn didn't fall far from the tree.”

Orlando Sentinel: 75
“Trial by Jury might not be doing anything new, but it's telling stories extremely well. The verdict: Long may this court be in session.”

Wall Street Journal: 75
“...the emphasis is on the contest between the prosecutors and the defense, the hard detail of the battle tactics. It's an emphasis that plays out superbly, if the first three shows are any measure.”

New York Post: 50
“Unfortunately, by the third episode the plot becomes so fantastical that only a blindly devoted Law & Order fan would buy it.”

Pittsburgh Tribune: 50
“While fans will want to give the new show a try, the weak Trial By Jury may be proof that NBC has dipped into the L&O well one time too many.”

Arizona Republic: 25
“ As it stands, Law & Order: Trial by Jury isn't so much a radical departure from the original series and its spinoffs as it is Law & Order: Another One. And there are more than enough already.”

San Diego Union-Tribune: 25
“...stories start out with a stacked deck that makes the drama far less interesting and complex than it might have been.”

TV Review: Robot Chicken

The new stop-motion animated comedy from Buffy alum Seth Green redefines the term 'mixed reviews'

Robot Chicken
Created by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich
Cartoon Network Sundays at 11:30 P.M.
Consensus Score: 64 [okay] (10 Reviews)

2b Online:
100
“You need to watch Cartoon Network's Robot Chicken.”

Minneapolis Star Tribune:
100
Robot Chicken is wickedly funny and addictive.”

Eclipse Magazine:
83
“Finally, the best thing about Robot Chicken is that [Seth] Green and [Matthew] Senreich give their audience credit for having the intelligence and wit to pick up on even the most subliminal gag.”

Animation Insider:
75
“Overall, Robot Chicken is a funny program, but risks falling into monotony due to the naturally opposing issues of its medium.”

Chicago Sun-Times:
75
“Sometimes, indeed, you want heart. Sometimes you want something else.
Robot Chicken is something else.”

New York Post:
75
“...the show rips mostly Gen-X icons to ribbons.”

Stuff Magazine:
75
“...there is nothing on television like Robot Chicken.”

IGN:
60
“Worthy of a chuckle or two, we'll have to see if Robot Chicken can maintain its spot in the Adult Swim pecking order.”

Hollywood Reporter:
0
“Maybe the theory is that if you throw enough high-energy concepts into the mix, something will stick. But that idea doesn't pan out here.”

Toon Zone:
0
“If you're not staring at your TV dumbly by the end of the program, then congratulations, you're easily amused!”

TV Review: American Dad

Hey, does anyone want some reviews of Seth MacFarlane's new show American Dad? No? Here's some anyway, presented in metacritic style!

American Dad
Created by Seth MacFarlane
FOX
Consensus Score: 22

Stuff Magazine: 75
“It's not going to win any points for originality, but you know what? Family Guy was very funny. So is this. Suck it up, creativity Nazis”

Entertainment Central.com: 50
“For longevity, American Dad will need to be as smart with its characters as it is with its jokes.”

New York Times: 25
“Seth MacFarlane's American Dad has amusing moments and engaging characters, but when compared to The Simpsons, is crude and cheaply drawn.”

U-Wire.com: 25
“From the cheesy intro song ("The sun in the sky has a smile on his face! And he's shinin' a salute to the American race!") to the uncanny Family Guy -like characters, MacFarlane seems to have ripped off his own hit series. But everyone knows a rip-off, legal or not, almost always fails where the original succeeded.”

USA Today: 25
“If [MacFarlane] he has to copy from himself, fine. Just copy better material.”

Baltimore Sun: 0
“Me? I can't believe Fox would insult The Simpsons - its greatest contribution to popular culture and satirical art - by pairing it with a show that doesn't have a third of its wit or originality.”

Boston Globe: 0
The Simpsons is a model of the great potential of the form. But American Dad, which won't return to prime time until May 1, doesn't promise to provide much of anything, except a haven for a family of stick figures.”

Detroit Free Press: 0
“Instead, McFarlane seeks laughs from paint-by-numbers satirical setups, leering, silly sex jokes, an overflow of toilet humor and freak show characters like the dirty, flirty pet goldfish named Klaus.... Fox may have the last laugh with American Dad. But I'm still waiting for my first.”

Pop Matters.com: 0
“I just wish he had done it with more unique characters, stronger story construction, and a better class of dialogue. But he didn't, causing American Dad's post-Super Bowl debut to feel like a lame halftime show designed to keep us busy until the main event on 1 May. If he doesn't come up with better material by then, America might respond to his series the way it does to most halftime shows: by turning it off.”

Most Acclaimed Shows of the 2003-2004 Season

2003 helped to prove that the sitcom isn't dead, it's just that nobody's watching the good ones. Regardless, this year saw the emergence of the insanely acclaimed new series Arrested Development, easily taking the #1 spot, the discovery of The Office by American viewers (#1 for the 2002-2003 season) and Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm wrapping up another great season. But serialized dramas also had their place among the years best; Alias stands alone at #2, while the final season of Angel fends off Curb and Deadwood taking the #3 position. Overall it was a good year for FOX Broadcasting, as the teen-soap The O.C., the legendary Simpsons and slick newcomer Nip/Tuck also flaunt top 10 appearances. Most Acclaimed Shows of the 2002-2003 Season

You may as well remove the American flag on your cars window seal, and stick in its place a Union Jack. Yes, the British have came and put all of our shows to shame this year. With The Office, Ricky Gervais and co. have crafted the most praised sitcom since Frasier and easily snage the #1 position. And just because this was Buffy's final year doesn't mean that girl-power on the small screen is dead, Alias and the Gilmore Girls occupy the other two spots in the top 3. But guys don't fret, everybody still inexplicably loves Raymond and Jack Bauer still has bad days to fill your testosterone void.

Most Acclaimed Shows of the 2001-2002 Season

This was definitely not a very decisive year, the next to top ranking show (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) scored a lowly 42.50. Without a single unfying excellent series, the critical concensus was muddled and thus several merely good seasons managed to claim top honors. No worries, the first season of The Office offerrs some redemption. Still, overall a bad year for T.V. Maybe next year...
